Sylvester A. Pat Spieker

Sylvester "Pat" A. Spieker, 96, of Hillsboro, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at his beloved Green Park home. He was surrounded by his wife for 70 years, Alvina (Lordemann), family and caregivers, John and Ligia Teodosiu. Pat was born to Joseph J. and Emma Christella (Williams) Spieker on March 20, 1917, in Petersburg, Neb. In 1941, Pat met the love of his life at a Christmas dance at the Parish Hall in Raeville. They were wed on June 1, 1943, at St. Bonaventure Church in Raeville, Neb. Pat worked for American Export Airlines in New York prior to deployment by the U.S. Naval Reserves to Goose Bay, Labrador, to service transport planes during WWII. Following an injury, Pat returned to Nebraska and began his career as an electrician. In 1956, Pat moved with his wife and six children to Hillsboro. He was a 57-year member of the St. Matthew Parish. Pat proudly held a 55-year membership with IBEW Local 48 while working for Ben Faber and Christensen Electric. He and Alvina raised their six children on seven acres in Hillsboro. Pat treasured spending time with family and friends, gardening and making home-brew. He shared his wit, wisdom and friendship with all who were near. Pat is survived by his wife, Alvina; children, Joseph (Judy), Marilyn (Daniel) Durkin, Ronald (Janice), Susan (Gary) Purdy, Michael (Jill) and Vivian (Eric) Feldman; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Clara Schmitz; and numerous nieces and nephews. Recitation of the rosary at 1:30 p.m. followed by a memorial Mass at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro, with reception at the Parish Hall.
